Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp active dry yeast
  • 3/4 cup warm water (110°F)
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 large ripe tomatoes, chopped
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 8 oz fresh mozzarella cheese, torn into pieces
  • Fresh basil leaves (about 10 leaves)
  • 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • Pinch of salt for garnish

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5 minutes until bubbly.
  2. In a separate bowl, mix flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture and olive oil; stir until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until smooth. Place in an oiled bowl, cover, and let rise for 1 hour.
  4. In a bowl, mash the chopped tomatoes with salt until chunky.
  5. Preheat your oven to 475°F (245°C).
  6. Roll out the risen dough on a floured surface to your desired shape (about 12 inches in diameter).
  7. Spread the tomato sauce evenly over the dough.
  8. Scatter pieces of mozzarella over the sauce.
  9. Bake in the preheated oven for 10–12 minutes or until cheese is bubbly and crust is golden.
  10. Once baked, add fresh basil leaves and drizzle with olive oil before slicing.
