Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 3 large eggs (room temperature)
  • 1 cup whole milk (or buttermilk)
  • ½ cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • Zest and juice of 2 fresh oranges
  • ½ cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • Zest and juice of 1 fresh orange

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease two round cake pans with butter and dust with flour.
  2. In a mixing bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until well combined.
  3. In another bowl, cream softened butter and granulated sugar until fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
  4. Mix in milk, vanilla extract, orange zest, and juice until combined.
  5. Gradually add dry ingredients to the wet mixture. Mix gently until just combined.
  6. Divide batter evenly between prepared pans and bake for about 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  7. Let cakes cool in pans for about ten minutes before transferring onto wire racks to cool completely.
  8. In a mixing bowl, beat softened butter until creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar and cocoa powder while mixing.
  9. Incorporate orange zest and juice until the frosting is smooth and spreadable.
  10. Once cakes are cooled, frost between layers and around the sides with chocolate-orange frosting.
